Edmonton police officer facing prison time in fatal collision trial

WATCH ABOVE: An Edmonton police officer is on trial, accused of dangerous driving that killed an elderly woman. Kendra Slugoski reports.

EDMONTON — The trial of an Edmonton police officer facing a serious charge in a 2012 fatal collision began Monday.

Chris Luimes is charged with dangerous driving causing death in the March 2012 death of Anne Walden. The 84-year-old woman was making a left turn in south Edmonton when her car was struck by a vehicle driven by Luimes.

The constable was taking part in a surveillance mission in an unmarked police car and was driving 120 km/h — twice the legal limit — at the time of the collision at 75 Street and 76 Avenue.

An ASIRT investigation lead to the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years.
