Senneville mom: my autistic son barred from grad

MONTREAL — The mother of a 17-year-old student at Felix-Leclerc School is furious her autistic son has been told he cannot attend the school’s graduation.

Maryse Savoie said she contacted the school in Point-Claire, Que. in February, so son Trevor Jackson could walk with the rest of his classmates in the June ceremony, but she was told that this would not be allowed.

Autism advocates reacted strongly to the news on Thursday.

“This isn’t the 1900s,” said Electra Dalamagas of Autism Montreal.

School board officials told Global News that because Trevor would be continuing his education at another school in the future, this was not a case of exclusion.

However, after reflection, officials said they would be revisiting the issue.

“In time for the end-of-year ceremonies and working with all the stakeholders, scenarios will be developed in the coming days to reflect the needs of all concerned,” confirmed Jean-Michel Nahas, a spokesperson for the Marguerite Bourgeoys school board.
