Local fire departments battled the blaze, putting it out at about 6:30 p.m.

The size of the fire and strong north winds prompted Russell, Roblin and Rossburn RCMP to evacuate Binscarth School, a kindergarten to Grade 8 school a block away from the fire scene. Evening activities at the school were cancelled. Neighbouring homes were also evacuated while the fire was brought under control, but no other property was damaged.

The cause of the fire doesn’t appear suspicious, RCMP said.
