Search for missing 19-year-old man continues after canoe capsized in Chambly

Watch above: A 19-year-old man is missing and presumed drowned after a canoeing accident in the Chambly Basin on Monday night.

MONTREAL — The search resumed Tuesday morning for a 19-year-old man who went missing after a canoeing accident in the Chambly Basin Monday evening.

The accident happened as the young man and a 17-year-old woman were returning from supper on the other side of the basin. They were caught by surprise when high winds gusted across the water, capsizing the canoe.

Police said that although there were life jackets in the canoe, neither the man nor the woman were wearing one at the time the boat tipped over.

After clinging to a life jacket together in the water for nearly an hour, the woman put the life jacket on. It was at this point that the two were separated, as the high winds and waves carried the man away.

At around 7:35 p.m., the woman was rescued when residents heard her cries from the water.

She was transported to hospital and treated for shock and hypothermia.

A search was organized, as firefighters looked in vain for the missing man until 1:30 a.m.

Although the canoe, a paddle and a life jacket were discovered, the young man was not found.

The search resumed at first light Tuesday morning.
