Families of victims react to charges laid in ‘homeless homicides’ case

WINNIPEG — The father of one of the men police say was murdered by a serial killer has decided he must forgive the accused to find closure.

Miles Monias was attacked and left for dead at a bus shelter on Main Street and Pioneer Avenue on April 10th.

On Tuesday police phoned his father Ron, in Island Lake First Nation, to explain they had arrested and charged John Paul Ostamas with the crime.

“The first thing we thought of is we must forgive that person,” said Ron Monias. “We are taught to forgive.”

The 37-year-old victim was the father of four girls. His parents don’t believe he was homeless but did say he spent a lot of time with those who live on the streets.

“He put others before himself,” said Monias.

Police say Monias was the first of three victims allegedly killed by Ostamas.

Both Donald Collins, 65, and Stony Bushie, 48 were murdered over the weekend.

Stanley Bushie was 48 when he was killed. He was one of two men found dead in downtown Winnipeg alleys on Saturday. Family handout

Bushie’s family says Stony had flown to Winnipeg from Little Grand Rapids last month. He was supposed to attend a medical appointment mid March, but they hadn’t heard from him since.

On Monday they were told he had been murdered.

“He’s in heaven right now with his mom,” said niece Amanda Martins.  “So he’s happy now.  We don’t have to worry anymore.”
