Regina’s Strawberry Fair goes ahead sans berries

REGINA – It appears the severe drought south of the border is being felt here in Regina.

St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral said Tuesday that their supplier is unable to get any strawberries for their Strawberry Fair due to the conditions in the US.

The event will go ahead as planned on Saturday without the berries, but will sell things like home baked goods, deli items and collectibles.

Organizer, Elvira Beday said they have never run into a situation like this in the fair’s 27 years, and adds that with the event just days away the show must go on.

“For for the last six weeks we’ve been working on our fair and people are ready to go,” she said.  “If we were to postpone it we would lose volunteers, we would lose people who go out of town after the long weekend and stuff like that.”

The fair is St. Paul’s Cathedral’s biggest fundraiser of the year and raises around $25,000 annually.

The strawberry-less fair will run May 2nd from 8:30 a.m until 2 p.m at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The strawberries are expected to arrive later in the month and will be on sale at the same place and same time, May 30th.
