REGINA – It’s starting to feel a lot like summer in the Queen City, and it appears with warm weather comes the pesky-mosquito.

That’s right, mosquito season is upon us.

City crews have already been treating bodies of water in and around Regina for mosquito larva for the past three weeks.

Russell Eirich is the City of Regina’s Forestry and Pesk Control Manager, said that we’re experiencing a bit of an earlier spring than normal this year, but adds that this is a pretty normal time to start monitoring numbers.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Inside the city itself, a lot of the traditional sites are dry so we’re seeing a dryer start to the season,” he said.  “What we are noticing is that just outside the city limits, in the ditches and along the highways, we’re seeing a little bit of water there so that’s really where we are concentrating our efforts right now.”

Eirich said it’s too early to report any population counts but said people are likely just noticing more mosquitoes now because they are spending more time outdoors because of the warm weather.

To help keep the pest at bay, residents are encouraged to empty any standing water they may have around their yard and wear long sleeve clothing outside in the evening.
