Alberta election boss probes donations to PC Party constituencies

EDMONTON – Alberta’s chief electoral officer is investigating 10 Progressive Conservative riding associations for receiving possibly illegal campaign donations.

The investigation involves allegations the ridings accepted political donations from banned organizations, including municipalities.

It is illegal for publicly funded organizations to finance partisan politics.

PC Party president Bill Smith has promised they will co-operate fully with the investigation.

By law, the 10 ridings under investigation cannot be identified by the chief electoral officer during the investigation.

The issue came to light last fall when a CBC-TV report revealed the town of St. Paul had paid for politicians and officials to attend a Conservative party fundraiser.
