Does Toronto need a new motto?

TORONTO – Does Toronto need a new motto? Some people are suggesting just that, as a new report about the future of the city is brought forward to City Council. 

A research report suggesting various ways of improving Toronto has been put forward at City Council. The report “Balanced and Bolder: Recommendations for strengthening Toronto’s official plan,” suggests revisions to transportation, city planning and pedestrian only streets.

Many cities have turned to new slogans or mottos as a way to upgrade their brand. The official motto for Toronto, decided in 1998, is “Diversity, Our Strength.” The motto draws reference to amalgamation and the diversity it draws from the various communities that make up Toronto.

Toronto’s current slogan is only the second official motto in city history. The first motto, “Industry, Intelligence, Integrity,” was written in 1834 and used up until 1998. 

NOTE: This is a corrected version of the story. The previous version erroneously suggested that Peter Milczyn called for changing the city’s motto.
