Montreal mayor launches tree-planting drive for Earth Day

MONTREAL – Mayor Denis Coderre celebrated Earth Day – and the city’s upcoming birthday – by launching a tree-planting drive in Montreal.

Coderre was participating in a program dubbed “Un arbre chez vous,” which aims to plant 375 trees in various Montreal organizations for Earth Day.

The number is also hooked to the upcoming 375th anniversary of Montreal’s founding, and is part of a longer program that seeks to plant 375,000 trees in the city.

Coderre planted his first tree around noon at the collège de Montréal.

“I’m encouraging individuals and the businesses of Montreal to register for this large distribution of trees,” he said in a prepared release.

The city announced in February an investment of $12.9 million, devoted green measures in Montreal.

The 375,000 arbres initiative is a cooperative measure that seeks to increase the number of trees in Montreal by three per cent by 2017.
