It’s going to get a lot easier to remember when to take out the trash in Winnipeg.
The city says it’s planning to switch from its rotating 5 day schedule to a system of set days for each neighbourhood. So instead trying to remember which day of the week “Day 1” or “Day 3”, etc falls on, your home’s garbage and recycling will always be picked up on Monday or Tuesday or whatever day of the week it is assigned.

The change will be rolled out gradually between June and October this year as areas of the city are gradually issued their new automated garbage carts.
The new pickup schedule will only be interrupted if your pickup day falls on New Year’s day, Remembrance Day or Christmas. In those weeks, the collection will occur one day later including Saturday. It’s a major change in Winnipeg, where the rotating 5 day schedule often results in long delays between pickups over the holidays.
Tuesday was the busiest day of the year for recycling pickup in Winnipeg – with about 300 metric tonnes of holiday trash expected to be collected compared to 160 tonnes on a normal day.
