EDMONTON — Injuries have put the breaks on Oilers Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov attending the upcoming World Hockey Championship.
Forward Nail Yakupov won’t be attending Russia’s training camp because of a hip injury. The decision was made after Yakupov met with Oilers’ medical staff.
“Nail has been suffering from bilateral hip injuries this season and after further examination and MRI imaging, he requires additional treatment and rehabilitation,” said the team’s head physician, Dr. Dhiren Naidu.

The 21-year-old signed a two-year, $5-million (USD) contract extension with the Oilers Monday. Yakupov was drafted by the Oilers first overall in 2012.
After meeting with Oilers medical staff, it was determined forward Nugent-Hopkins will not play for Canada in the championship because of a fracture in his right foot.
Officials say his injury requires more time to heal and so he won’t be able to participate.
Nugent-Hopkins missed the team’s last three regular season games.
He was drafted first overall in 2011 and is second in points this year behind Jordan Eberle.
