SASKATOON – It’s the final leg of a new beginning for a dozen rescued “wiener” dogs. The Saskatoon SPCA seized the 12 dachshunds and they are all now ready available for new homes.

On Monday, the canines moved to the adoption floor at the animal shelter to meet with potential owners.

“These adorable dachshunds are just a glimpse into the kinds of situations that we are often faced with and desperately want to correct in our community,” says Lindsay Royale, public relations coordinator at the Saskatoon SPCA.

The dachshunds have been recovering since March 3 after being seized by the Saskatchewan SPCA from a neglectful situation. Costs to nurse the dogs back to health is estimated at $25,000.

The non-profit organization depends on donations from the community to rescue animals in and around the Bridge City and is hoping for one final push for these animals. Pet lovers are invited to help the dachshunds and other future adoptees have a second chance by joining the SPCA’s “Race to a New Life” campaign.

“We know how much the people of Saskatoon love their pets and wanted to give everyone a chance to take action on the issues of animal neglect and homelessness,” said Royale.

Each dog has its own online profile to gather donations, or “bets”, as people cheer on their favourite dogs on finding adopters. The organization anticipates the 12 dachshunds will be racing into their new homes by Thursday, once proper applicants are chosen.
