WATCH: Two bodies found after fire at abandoned warehouse in East Vancouver

WATCH: Two bodies are found after a vacant warehouse in East Vancouver catches fire. Ted Chernecki reports.

Two people are dead after a three-storey building was destroyed in an early morning fire in East Vancouver.

It is believed the fire broke out at the building on East Hastings Street near Campbell Avenue around 2 a.m.

The flames could be seen as far away as the North Shore.

Initially, Vancouver Fire said the structure was an apartment building, but it appears to be a warehouse that was scheduled for demolition and was abandoned.

Global BC crews on the scene said the top floor of the building collapsed, although nearby businesses were not badly damaged.

There were two people inside hanging off one of the balconies when firefighters arrived. They escaped with minor injuries.

Investigators now say two bodies — that of a homeless man and his mother — were found at the warehouse later that morning.

Several witnesses have been interviewed and investigators believe that there was possibly another person who managed to escape the burning building who has not yet spoken with police.

Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to contact the Vancouver Police at (604) 717-2962 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
