Penticton mom believes accident waiting to happen

PENTICTON – A Penticton mother is sounding the alarm about what she says is a dangerous intersection.  Carmen Whitlock says she’s speaking out after her five-year old-son almost got run over by a truck that nearly went through the crosswalk.

“Someone is going to get killed, because drivers are not paying attention and they’ve got to smarten up, it’s ridiculous,” says Whitlock.

The light-activated crosswalk is on a busy section of Power Street.  It’s situated near Queens Park elementary school and frequented by many school children every day.  It’s also across from both the community and convention centres.

The City of Penticton recently improved road safety in front of three elementary schools by installing speed bumps.  Whitlock would like to see the same happen at the Power Street crosswalk too.

“This is the first time the city has heard it is becoming an issue again, ” says Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit. “Perhaps enforcement and a reminder of speeds is the first step and we will consider traffic calming measures if required.”

Jakubeit says the city will review traffic volumes and speeds near the intersection before taking any potential action.
