PICTOU, N.S. – A Nova Scotia man has been found guilty of mischief and theft of a ballot box during last May’s federal election.
Alexander James MacKenzie of Pictou Landing was charged with theft under $5,000 and mischief causing damage under $5,000 after swiping the box from a polling station in New Glasgow.

The 62-year-old man, wearing a black leather vest bearing the words “Ballot Box Bandit,” testified in his own defence during a two-hour trial Tuesday in Pictou provincial court.
Thomas Kilgour told the court he was working as a deputy returning officer at a church on May 2 when MacKenzie grabbed a ballot box and fled.
Kilgour said he followed MacKenzie and grabbed him, but the box fell to the ground and some ballots came out.
MacKenzie told the court he was trying to find ways to seek justice for his community.
He is due back in court on March 5 for a sentencing hearing.
