SHIPPAGAN, N.B. – Police say a church in Shippagan, N.B., lost several rows of pews when a sports utility vehicle crashed through its front doors on Wednesday night.
The RCMP say the vehicle stopped just before the altar but caused extensive damage to the church.
The Mounties say a 26-year-old man was arrested after the crash, taken to hospital and released into police custody.
Police say Jocelyn Mallet was charged with mischief over $5,000 during an appearance in Caraquet provincial court on Thursday. He has been sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation, and is scheduled to be back in court on May 4, 2015.
Police say no one else was injured.
The RCMP did not know the name of the church.
