Check stop Santa and students promote Operation Overdrive

Students joined RCMP, Broadview traffic services and the CN Rail police to hand out gingerbread cookies and other goods in promotion of Operation Overdrive on Friday.

The Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD) group from the Melville Comprehensive School were joined by Santa Claus, who handed out candy canes in support of the program.

This event also kicked off the “Report Impaired Drivers” program in the Melville and Ituna area.

Police forces across Saskatchewan teamed up with Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) to nab impaired drivers with Operation Overdrive. The province-wide enforcement initiative took place December 15th, 16th and 17th.

Approximately 4,200 vehicles were checked over the three-day period including 25 impaired drivers, 19 suspensions, and 31 seized vehicles. An additional 127 traffic safety act charges were issued as well.

In Saskatoon, the police force pulled over more than 500 vehicles on Thursday, resulting in three 24 hour suspensions, and then pulled over even more on Friday.

Melville is approximately 300 km southeast of Saskatoon.
