Possible C. difficile death at Niagara hospital in new outbreak

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – The Niagara Health System is trying to determine if C. difficile caused the death of a patient.

A person with C. difficile died over the weekend at the Greater Niagara General Hospital.

An outbreak of hospital associated C. difficile was declared on Unit D at the hospital on Dec. 8, six weeks after another C. difficile outbreak ended.

During that outbreak, 102 people fell ill with hospital-associated C. difficile over a five-month period and 37 patients with the bug died.

C. difficile caused the death of seven patients and was a contributing factor in another 11.

Currently there are seven cases of C. difficile on Unit D of the hospital (CKTB)
