TORONTO – Malorie Urbanovitch headed to Morocco just before Christmas on the hunt for design inspiration and found creative influences in abundance.
“The tapestries that they do and the methods — they’ve been using for thousands of years. It’s never changed and that was really inspiring for me,” Urbanovitch said backstage on Wednesday following her rapid-fire runway presentation at World MasterCard Fashion Week.
“I wanted to kind of mimic that in my collection.”
The line featured handwoven knits, some of which featured tassel accents — a nod to the practice of rug-making in Morocco.
The Edmonton-based designer also drew on the scenic landscapes from the North African country, translating shades reminiscent of blue skies and vibrant, sandy deserts into her luminous colour palette.
Urbanovitch also played with use of fur adornments, with trimmed coat collars and cropped tops featured in the range.
