TORONTO – Apple has released its iTunes Rewind 2011 list, highlighting the most popular iPhone apps for the year.
Taking the top spot for iPhone “App of the Year” is the free photo-sharing app, Instagram. Not only do Instagram’s many photo filters and effects make it nearly impossible to take a bad photo, it is also one of the world’s fastest-growing social networks. Take a photo via Instagram, style it to your liking, and easily share it on Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr.
Instagram’s Chief Executive Kevin Systrom said that has of last week there have been between 14 and 15 million users on iOS, and an Android version is on its way.

Runner-up for the best free app of the year is music app, Band of the Day. Every day, users receive information on an emerging band, including songs, reviews and biographies – all sent right to your iPhone.
The iTunes Rewind 2011 review also lists the top free and top paid apps of the year. Similar to 2010’s top apps, games about enraged animals reign supreme, with Angry Birds dominating in both paid app category, and giving a strong showing with free versions as well.

Meanwhile, in the category of top free apps, social networking took the lead with Facebook and Skype in the top spots, and Bump and Twitter rounding out the top ten.
