Spring thaw causing leaks at Legislative Building

Repair costs due to a leaky roof at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building are expected to be in the "thousands" of dollars. Adrian Raaber / Global News

REGINA – Like many century-old structures, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building is springing a few leaks this time of year.

Water is dripping onto the third floor under the massive dome renewal project.

Damage is mostly limited to plaster, according to building manager Steve Bata, but with all the renovation work going on, some of the leaks remain a mystery.

“Some of the water will find the easiest way into the building,” Bata said. “There are so many cracks and crevices in the stone that you find one or two and (then) you get up into a tall space and find there’s one more little one to go.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Bata said some of the work includes steam cleaning of stones on the roof.

“We’ve had some water issues before and that’s one of the reasons we’re doing the dome project.”
