GOP senators warn Iran-US nuclear deal may not last

WASHINGTON – Forty-seven Republican senators are warning that any agreement the Obama administration strikes with Iran to limit Tehran’s nuclear program may be short-lived unless Congress approves the deal.

In an open letter to Iranian leaders, Sen. Tom Cotton and 46 other Republicans say that without congressional approval, they will consider any deal between the two nations merely an executive agreement between President Barack Obama and Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The senators say such a pact can be reversed by a future president with the stroke of a pen.

The letter seems aimed at delivering the message as much to Obama as to Iran.

Republicans and some Democrats want Congress to vote on any agreement.

The deadline for the outline of U.S.-Iranian deal is at the end of March.
