Fire investigators asking for public’s help in piecing together Victoria Park fire

CALGARY – Fire crews remained at the scene of Saturday’s massive fire near Centre Street and 17th Avenue SW on Sunday afternoon.

It tore through a construction site in the middle of the day, getting attention of Calgarians from across the city.

Fire investigators are now asking the public for help in piecing together how it all started. Officials are particularly interested in photos of the roof taken at the beginning of the fire.

If anyone has any pictures, video or information to pass along to the Calgary Fire Department about this blaze, you’re asked to email brad.mcdonald@calgary.ca.

More than 24 hours after the fire started, crews continued to put out hot spots lurking on the third and fourth floors of the building.

Roads remain closed and anxious business owners returned to get a closer look.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I saw the flames just continue to grow and I was just crossing my fingers hoping that our building would remain intact,” Zack Lister, who owns a business nearby said.

The fire started just before noon on Saturday at a condo building under construction.

Thick black smoke could be seen from across the city.

Homes and businesses in the immediate area were evacuated.

Luckily firefighters were able to get the blaze under control quickly.

“For location and the fact that it happened on the weekend worked in our favour and also the fact that there were no strong winds,” Al Magwood from the Calgary Fire Department said.

The four storey development was expected to be completed this June.

Now, officials are trying to determine when and how much of the building will be torn down.

“Currently we’re in discussion with the owners of the building to give them an update on our direction and the tactics we’re going to be incorporating under the next number of hours,” Magwood said.

So far, investigators have not been able to get in to the building due to safety concerns.

The Calgary Fire Department is appealing to the public for help.

“What would be wonderful is if the general public has some earlier images of the fire could send those to the fire investigations unit for review, preferably from an elevated point of view,” fire investigator Brad McDonald said.

Zack Lister’s business, Well Juicery, managed to make it out unscathed.

Now the shop wants to give back to the firefighters that helped save their store.

“We’re going to set up a little lemonade stand outside of our building and all the proceeds will be donated to the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society,” Zack Lister said.

Arson investigators are expected to gain access to the site on Monday.
