Generators to help northern Quebec communities dealing with power outage

MONTREAL – More than a dozen generators will be used to provide power in two northern Quebec aboriginal communities that are coping with frigid temperatures.

A power outage occurred Monday in Chisasibi and Wemindji in the province’s power-producing heartland, off the east coast of James Bay.

About 5,200 people were left in the dark initially.

On Wednesday, about one-third of the 4,000 residents in Chisasibi had had their power restored, leaving about 2,500 without electricity. In the Cree community of Wemindji, a generator was providing electricity to 1,200 residents.

Chief Abraham Rupert of Chisasibi says his community has coped fairly well since Monday.

Overnight temperatures have hit about -20 C.

Native Affairs Minister Geoffrey Kelley said in Quebec City on Wednesday the government was following the situation closely.
