Vancouver teachers plan protest at Christy Clark’s office over stalled contract talks

 VANCOUVER – Vancouver teachers plan to gather outside Premier Christy Clark’s constituency office this afternoon to show their frustration with the lack of progress toward a new contract, and they’re inviting school trustees and parents to join them.

Chris Harris, president of the Vancouver Elementary School Teachers’ Association, said they want to send a message to Premier Christy Clark, Education Minister George Abbott and the provincial government.

“They need to change their net-zero mandate and come to the table with some reasonable funding for the public education system,” he said in a release, referring to the government’s two-year freeze on public-sector pay increases that has hobbled negotiations since they began March. 1

There has been no significant progress towards a new contract despite 59 days of bargaining.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) says its members want a pay hike that will bring their salaries into line with those in Ontario and Alberta, but it has not yet indicated what percentage increase would be required.

The rally is slated for 4 p.m. at 3615 W 4th Avenue.
