WINNIPEG – A break-in and police pursuit that began in Winnipeg ended with a vehicle crash and the death of a suspect just outside the city, police say.

It began at about 11 p.m. Wednesday when officers spotted a white van that was suspected of being involved in a commercial break-in on Cavalier Drive.

The van, which was marked with the name of a local paint store, had been stolen earlier in the evening, police said in a news release Thursday.

The vehicle sped away from officers that attempted to pull it over at Portage Avenue and Moray Street. Officers didn’t pursue on the ground for very long; the police helicopter spotted the fleeing vehicle and observed it as it sped west on Roblin Boulevard and then south on Wescana Street in Headlingley where it crashed and rolled into a ditch.

One male suspect fled on foot but was observed by the helicopter crew and arrested in the yard of a home nearby. A second suspect, who police say was driving the van, was found badly injured and rushed to hospital in critical condition where he later died.
