RCMP search property after man killed in home invasion near Carstairs

CALGARY – One man was killed after an home invasion at a rural property near Carstairs, Alberta.

Police say three masked suspects entered a home where a struggle took place between the trio and those living in the home.

During the struggle a 67-year-old man who was in the home was shot. He later died at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary.

“This is not a random attack, we do believe it was targeted,” said RCMP Cpl. Sharon Franks. “As for the details of why that took place, that’s what we’re working on right now.”

The property is located just northwest of Carstairs, at Township Road 303 and Range Road 35. A search of the property was underway Tuesday, with multiple police cars on scene for much of the afternoon.

“We believe this is the scene of the homicide and that’s what we’re there to focus on at this moment,” said Franks. “The property is fairly extensive and it will take some time to do a search of that property, as well as the residents of that property.”

Carstairs is about 60 kilometres north of Calgary.
