Winnipeg Police warn phone call scams on the rise

Winnipeg Police Service warns phone related frauds are on the rise. File / Global News

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Police Service says scammers have been convincing victims they owe large amounts of taxes and must pay them off to the suspect.

The caller claims to be an associate with “Taxation Canada” and says the victim needs to make a payment. The victim is urged to purchase a prepaid Visa gift card and give the caller the gift card code over the phone. Once the scammer has the code they have access to the money.

The Winnipeg Police Service is encouraging the public not to engage these callers or to send any type of gift card as payment.

The Commercial Crime Unit urges the public to discuss the scam with elderly family members or anyone who may be susceptible to this type of scam. For more information visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website here.
