Six-year-old Meika Jordan was murdered: Calgary Police

CALGARY – Police say the death of a young girl in northeast Calgary earlier this month is now being classified as a homicide.

Police are speaking with the family of six-year-old Meika Jordan; on Sunday, November 13th, Meika was rushed to hospital from her home in Temple with serious injuries. She died in hospital the next day.

Global News spoke with Meika’s biological mother and step father last week; they say they were originally told Meika fell down the stairs.

Since her death, they’ve been desperate for answers.

“Being a mom, I’ve seen numerous children fall down numerous flights of stairs and they’ve all gotten up and walked away,” says Kyla Guttman, Meika’s mother.

Homicide investigators now believe she was murdered.

“The cause of death is blunt force trauma and the injuries are inconsistent with the everyday activities of a child or falling down stairs,” says S/Sgt. Doug Andrus.

Her parents had been in an ongoing custody dispute. She was in the care of her biological father Spencer Jordan and step mother Marie Magoon when she was hurt.

Guttman says she had to call police last summer after her children disappeared for three weeks; officers later found them with Spencer and Marie at a city homeless shelter.

So far no charges have been laid. Police say the investigation could take some time.
