VERNON — Vernon RCMP have nabbed an Alberta man who put up a fight with a police dog before being arrested.
The 46-year-old man was spotted allegedly trying to steal a trailer containing two snowmobiles in the parking lot of Silver Star resort last Thursday.
The suspect was driving a white Ford pickup truck with Alberta plates.
The truck was found down an embankment off Silver Star Road. The suspect had fled on foot.
“The police service dog team followed a track and located one male suspect,” says Vernon RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk.
“When the police dog approached the suspect the man started hitting our police dog. Our dog handler had to immediately intervene to prevent injury to the police dog. The suspect was finally subdued and handcuffed.”
Molendyk says the police dog was not injured and the suspect had to be treated for a dog bite to the head.
He says the man was wanted by police.
“The suspect who was arrested, our officers later discovered to have provided a false name. It turns out he has numerous warrants out of Alberta. He has been remanded in custody.”
