Jennifer Jones still perfect for Manitoba at curling championship

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Jennifer Jones stole five points in the decisive seventh end to lead Manitoba to a 9-3 rout of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Heather Strong on Monday in Draw 6 action at the Canadian women’s curling championship.

Jones and her Winnipeg rink improved to 4-0 in round-robin play at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Homan and Alberta’s Val Sweeting, both just behind Jones at 3-0, were idle in Monday’s morning draw. Sweeting was to play Strong in the afternoon while Homan took on B.C.’s Patti Knezevic.

Jones and Homan were to meet in Monday evening’s showcase game at Mosaic Place.

In other Draw 6 action, Northern Ontario’s Tracy Horgan beat Nova Scotia’s Mary-Anne Arsenault 8-4, B.C. downed Prince Edward Island’s Suzanne Birt 7-4 and Ontario’s Julie Hastings edged Quebec’s Lauren Mann 6-5.

Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, P.E.I., and Northern Ontario were all tied in fourth place at 2-2 after six draws. The top four teams at the end of round-robin play Friday morning will make the playoffs.

Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton was 1-2, ahead of Quebec, Nova Scotia and B.C. at 1-3. New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud is the lone winless skip at 0-4.

The medal games are scheduled for Sunday.
