Quebecor refuses to comment on reports of 400 job cuts

MONTREAL – Montreal-based Quebecor Inc. is reportedly laying off 400 employees from its Sun Media chain of newspapers and other properties, according to reports from employees posting on the social networking site Twitter.

The telecommunications company would not comment on the reports, but one employee tweeted that 400 jobs were being cut chain-wide, while another tweeted that 20 staff members were laid off Monday at the Calgary Sun newspaper, with more cuts expected in rural Alberta.

Quebecor spokesperson Serge Sasseville has refused speak with the media on this subject.

The media conglomerate owns numerous Sun newspapers across Canada, as well as several other properties including the London Free Press and Kingston Whig-Standard. Its SunNews 24-hour news channel was launched last year.

The Sun chain’s last big round of layoffs came just before Christmas in 2008 with 600 jobs cut.
