TORONTO – BlackBerry has hired David Kleidermacher as its new chief security officer to oversee the company’s mobile security technology efforts.
Kleidermacher will oversee the development of security-specific research, product development and BlackBerry’s product certification and approval program, according to the Waterloo, Ont.-based company.
Before joining BlackBerry, Kleidermacher served as chief technology officer at Green Hills software, a software company that targets many of the same security-conscious customers as BlackBerry.

“David is an outstanding addition to our best-in-class security team, and he will help extend BlackBerry’s gold standard of security as we work with customers to meet new cybersecurity challenges,” said CEO John Chen in a press release.
“In particular, David’s knowledge of securing the Internet of Things and embedded systems will be invaluable as we execute on our strategy and continue to expand our management of the world’s mobile endpoints.”
In January, BlackBerry announced plans for a cloud-based Internet of Things platform that will provide hardware and software support for cloud-based communications boxes built into shipping containers for the trucking industry.
BlackBerry also sees an opportunity to sell similar technology to automakers, who could install sensors in cars to detect mechanical problems and notify drivers when they need to get their vehicle serviced.
