Supply ship strikes oil rig off Newfoundland, damages support column

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – An offshore supply ship struck a drill rig off Newfoundland on Thursday afternoon, damaging it above the water line but not jeopardizing its safety or the environment, an official says.

Husky spokeswoman Colleen McConnell says there were no injuries on either the GSF Grand Bank or the vessel Maersk Detector.

She said the rig sustained damage to one of its eight support columns but the damage doesn’t affect the rig’s stability and is confined to an area above the water line.

The rear portion of the supply vessel was also damaged.

McConnell said operations on the rig were suspended and it will be brought to shore for repairs.

The rig is operating in the White Rose field and is not an oil-producing rig, but a water-injecting rig.
