Redbox video rental machines pulled from Canada

WINNIPEG — If you are a fan of renting movies the old-fashioned way, there is now one less option.

Redbox has announced it will close all of its machines in Canada on March 5.

The machines were placed in grocery stores in mid-2012 and offered rentals starting at $1.50 plus tax.

The company sent an email to users explaining the demand in Canada did not meet their expectations and Redbox will focus its attention on the American market.

The last day to rent from Redbox will be Feb. 13 and movies have to be returned by March 5.

Chicago-based Redbox has 1,400 rental kiosks in Canada.

Redbox president Mark Horak said “very few” employees and contractors will be affected.
