HALIFAX – Police have issued a warning to people selling cars in Halifax after four local dealerships lost a combined $50,000 to a scam artist in the past week.
According to the Halifax Regional Police financial crime unit, a man has gone to dealerships and agreed to pay for a vehicle via electronic money transfer. After the dealer has received notification the money has been transferred, the man has taken the car, only for the dealer to find out days later that the funds were transferred fraudulently.
Police say the investigation is in the early stages, but the man is apparently depositing fraudulent cheques into his own bank accounts before transferring it to the dealerships.
The suspect being sought is described as a man in his 50s who is 6-1, 300 pounds with a thin moustache and dark hair.
