TORONTO – For the second time in six weeks the Grand Canyon filled with clouds in what is normally a rare event.

Visitors were treated to a sea of rolling clouds Wednesday thanks to a weather phenomenon called a “total cloud inversion.”

According to the U.S. Interior Department, the weather event occurs when the air is cooler near the bottom of the canyon than above it, creating moisture.

“While typically a rare event, this is the second cloud inversion at the Grand Canyon in six weeks,” the Interior Department said.

The Grand Canyon gradually will clear in a day or two.

On New Year’s Day, the canyon was blanketed in snow.
