UPDATE: PENTICTON: Ashton re-elected

Dan Ashton is the first mayor to be re-elected in Penticton since 1993.

But he is quick to admit Saturday night’s results are far from a ringing endorsement.

“Is it a ringing endorsement? Absolutely not,” Ashton said. “When I looked at the numbers coming in, with Julius leading right up to the advanced polls, that goes to say there were some changes being contemplated in the community.”

Ashton has come under fire during his tenure for ongoing problems with the South Okanagan Events Centre and city staff layoffs.

But with Saturday’s victory, Ashton gets another chance to fulfill his vision for the city.

“We want to go forward. There are a lot of changes taking place. We knew this was going to be difficult,” he said.

Meanwhile, Julius Bloomfield says he is disappointed with with the outcome but adds the results are an indication of the discontent among voters.

“I think it is a wake up call for the current administration. They are going to have to take notice of what the voters have said,” Bloomfield said.

Below are the numbers in the Penticton mayoral race:

Dan Ashton (incumbent): 3124

Julius Bloomfield: 2978

Vic Powell: 372
