Young worker killed by snapped lifting shackle at Alberta jobsite

COALHURST, Alta. – A man in southern Alberta is dead after he was struck on the head while lifting a concrete block with a crane.

The 23-year-old Lethbridge resident was killed early Thursday afternoon near Coalhurst, about 210 kilometres south of Calgary.

The man was pronounced dead at hospital.

His name has not been released.

RCMP say a preliminary investigation shows the victim was fatally injured when a shackle hooked to the block snapped and hit him.

Police and Occupational Health and Safety are investigating.
