Slow-going for Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race in the Okanagan

BIG WHITE, B.C. — Big White held the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan (GNCT) race Saturday on some pretty slushy slopes. University engineering students from all over Canada and the US showcased their sled’s abilities, some a year in the making.

Unfortunately due to the melting snow it was sometimes difficult to slide back down the hill.

“Not all of them made it down the hill. The snow is a little soft and there were a couple little spills at the top” says Vice President of the 2015 GNCT Tim Abbott.

Sled performance is judged on concrete strength, steering and speed, so although the sleds didn’t slide as fast as students hoped, they still had the chance to gain points in other areas.

“Here with the milder weather…it’s not quite as quick but it’s definitely more of a challenge for your steering and breaking,” says Abbott.
