Mothers hold vigil in memory of teen homicide victim, Hannah Leflar

REGINA – A candlelight has been held for 16-year-old Hannah Leflar, the city’s first homicide victim of the year.

She attended Thom Collegiate, and the news of her death has hit that community very hard.

A trio of mothers of students at the school organized the vigil to honour Hannah’s memory.

“As parents, you can relate and you never dream of something like that happening. You hope something like that never happens so, as mothers, we just felt we needed to come together and do something,” said Jeneen Winder, one of the organizers.

The vigil started at 5:43 p.m., about the time police officers found the teen’s body.

The group met at Thom Collegiate. After a prayer, attendees walked the same path the victim used to walk home, and then laid tributes in the front yard.

The group is also collecting donations for the family.

“The money is going to help the family and the expenses that they now have to incur because nobody ever saves for their child's funeral,” said Shandy Maertens, another organizer.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday.

Two boys, 16, are now facing first-degree murder charges in this case.
