EDMONTON – Leduc received a 911 call at 2:35 Friday afternoon, reporting a distraught 65-year-old man inside a home near East Elementary School.
When officers learned the man reportedly had a loaded rifle, they created a perimeter, evacuated nearby residents or asked them to stay in their basements.

East Elementary School was also close to the residence. So, as a precaution, RCMP told the school to activate ‘hold and secure” protocol, where classes continue normally inside the school, but the school building is locked and contained.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m. the man surrendered peacefully to police. No charges are pending.
“Unpredictable situations cause police to use extreme caution and concern for public and police safety,” explained Cst. Julian Celms. “When these situations arise, we appreciate the cooperation of nearby residents and schools.”
The man has since been taken to an Edmonton area hospital by police under the Mental Health Act.
