But in December a finance company seized it because the previous owner still owed $16,000.

Cryderman had not obtained a Vehicle Information Report, which would have revealed a lien on the car.
Police told her it was a civil matter.
So Cryderman contacted the seller and fought back.
“I had actually given him the option, the choice of paying off the vehicle and not having charges pressed against him, or i was going to be suing him and charging him with fraud,” said Cryderman.
“So it was really push, push, push, staying in contact with him, leaving voice messages with him, emails and staying in contact between him and the finance company and trying to get this to work,” she added.
Vehicle Information Reports are available at Alberta registries, and generally cost less than $25.
