NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – The mayor of Niagara Falls says he’d like the city’s casinos to offer free drinks to gamblers in an effort to boost the number of visitors.

Jim Diodati points to U.S. casinos in places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, where free drinks are offered to entice gamers.

He says he’s asking Ontario’s finance minister about possible changes to allow the idea but he’s also looking at other measures to help boost attendance.

Diodati adds even with a low Canadian dollar, American visitors are continuing to stay at home and gamble at nearby casinos in Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and Detroit.

He says alcohol is just one of the issues the city is discussing with the province, including building a new multi-thousand seat theatre.
