Corporal Bryce Jeffrey Keller

Hometown Regina and member of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton.

Born on May 27th, 1979 and raised in Regina, Bryce Keller attended St. Bernadette School and Riffel High School. He joined the military in 1997.

Keller was killed on August 3rd, 2006 at 27-years-old. He died after a rocket-propelled grenade attack conducted by Taliban militants near the village of Pashmul. This attack occurred in a Taliban hotbed about 25 km west of Kandahar City.

Two other members of same battalion were killed in the attack. Thirty-five-year-old Sgt. Vaughan Ingram and 22-year-old Kevin Dallaire also lost their lives during this attack. They were only weeks from completing their six-month tour. Six other soldiers were injured in the attack.

In 2008, the Governor-General announced the posthumous award of the Medal of Military Valour to Cpl. Keller for his courage and leadership on August 3rd, 2006. On that day Keller sacrificed his life and saved the life of a critically injured soldier.

Keller was nicknamed “Smithers” by his military comrades.

Keller and his wife, Cpl. Sarah Keller met in 1998 on a military course in Kingston, Ontario. She is a medic with the Edmonton-based 1 Field Ambulance.

Keller was an animal lover and supported the Edmonton Humane Society. He had a dog named ‘Finn MacCool.’

He is survived by his parents and two brothers Scott and Bradley.

Cpl. Keller was laid to rest on August 15th, 2006 in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
