Weather warning continued for many parts of Saskatchewan

Environment Canada has ended a weather warning for Saskatoon and area but weather warnings remain in place for many parts of Saskatchewan as the first significant snowfall of the season hit the province.

A Colorado low brought the first significant snowfall of the season to central and eastern portions of the province. The snow will gradually taper off during the evening.

As of 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Saskatoon and Kindersley had received 3 cm of snow while in Regina, 8 cm of snow had fallen.

Northwest winds of 30 to 40 km/h are also producing localized blowing and drifting snow.

Environment Canada’s snowfall warning is 10 cm or more in 12 hours or less, however a weather warning is sometimes issued for slightly lesser amounts if it is the first event of the season.

Meanwhile, Highway Hotline is not recommending travel on all highways in the Regina area due to icy or slippery sections along with drifting and swirling snow along with reduced visibility. Travel is also not recommended in the Yorkton area due to reduced visibility along with icy and slippery sections and loose, swirling and drifting snow.

Highways in the Saskatoon area are reported to be icy or slippery along with loose and swirling snow and reduced visibility.

In Saskatoon, city crews are sanding and plowing priority one streets, including freeways and access to fire halls, hospitals and ambulance site, along with major roads including 22nd Street and 8th Street.
