UPDATE: Drive BC says the highway has been reopened.
RCMP have now confirmed two people died in the collision that closed the road. A northbound pickup truck collided with a southbound tractor trailer, which was carrying food products. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames and the two occupants of the pickup truck died.
The driver of the tractor trailer unit was transported to hospital in Kamloops with non-life threatening injuries.
Central Interior Traffic Services Ashcroft continues to investigate this collision and are assisting the B.C. Coroners Service with the identification and next of kin notification of the two deceased. Police say it is unknown at this time why the pickup truck crossed into the path of the commercial vehicle, but a witness told police, prior to the collision, they saw the pickup truck having difficulty staying within the northbound lane.
Roads were bare and dry at the time of the collision.
Story from Dec. 23 – Highway 1 about 20 kilometers south of Cache Creek is currently closed in both directions.
A car was reportedly on fire.
There’s no official confirmation from RCMP yet but witnesses say at least two people are believed to be dead.
Detours are westbound via Highway 97C from Ashcroft to Merritt.
