Theresa Oswald launches Manitoba NDP leadership campaign

WINNIPEG – Dozens of people gathered to hear former cabinet minister Theresa Oswald roll out her promises of what she’ll do if she becomes Manitoba’s premier.

“A pledge from me to you, from my heart to yours, to run a respectful and constructive campaign that is true to New Democratic values and responsive to your ideas to find our path to best serve Manitoba families,” said Oswald at her campaign launch.

Oswald also listed reasons why she believes Premier Greg Selinger isn’t fit to be the province’s leader any longer.

“We’ve seen a dip in the polls post PST decision, I’m not going to dance around that,” said Oswald. “I am on record saying I had some challenges with that decision and how it was implemented.”

Oswald knows winning back the trust of Manitobans will be a challenge for anyone who becomes leader of the NDP. Oswald and four other NDP cabinet ministers resigned from their portfolios in November after publicly stating Selinger should step down from his job.

“We are in a very unique situation, aren’t we,” said Oswald. “I think it might be unprecedented in Canadian history to have an incumbent, a sitting premier, running in a race.”

NDP MLAs Ron Lemieux and Nancy Allan introduced Oswald at the launch on Sunday.

“In politics, like sports, you want win,” said Lemieux. “I believe we have the best chance to win with Theresa Oswald.”

Selinger has said he plans to run but has yet to file his papers.
