Second chance at parole for B.C. gas-and-dash killer, Darnell Pratt

VANCOUVER – The 22-year-old who dragged a Maple Ridge, B.C., gas attendant to his death is being released to a Victoria halfway house today.

It’s the second chance at parole for Darnell Pratt, who was given statutory release in June, 2010, but lost his freedom just 48 hours later when he missed curfew.

Pratt’s latest release carries more than a dozen conditions, including mandatory counselling for mental health issues.

He was convicted in 2005 and given a six-year sentence for the manslaughter of Grant De Patie, who was dragged more than seven kilometres under a stolen car after being hit while trying to stop a so-called gas-and-dash.

Pratt, who was just 16 when De Patie died, has had several violent outbursts while behind bars, and the parole board lists him as a moderate risk to commit further crimes.

De Patie’s father, Grant De Patie, says he’s always hopeful Pratt will become a productive member of society, but doubts the young man can handle that responsibility. (CKNW)
